What is an "MCP", and how to connect Claude to your tools

API, MCP, browser, copy-paste: the four ways to connect Claude to your tools (Shopify, Gmail, Drive…), from simplest to most powerful — and why MCP changes everything.

1. The starting point: a brain without hands

Claude on its own is a brilliant mind with no hands. It can analyze what you show it, but it knows nothing about your Shopify or your emails until you open the door. "Connecting" Claude means giving it hands.

2. The 4 connection levels

From simplest to most powerful:

  1. Copy-paste / screenshot — zero installation. You paste text, a screenshot, an export. Perfect for getting started.
  2. The browser — you let Claude drive a browser to click/read on a site for you.
  3. The API — a programmed pipe between a service and Claude. More technical, but automatable.
  4. The MCP — the standard connector (see below). The cleanest and most durable approach.

The higher you go, the more powerful and durable it gets — but starting at the bottom is perfectly fine.

3. What an MCP is, concretely

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It's an open standard created by Anthropic: think of a universal adapter, like USB. Any MCP-compatible tool plugs into Claude without custom-built integration. You "connect" Shopify, Google Drive, Gmail… and Claude can then read and act within them, in the scope you authorize.

The point: instead of re-coding a custom integration for every tool, everyone speaks the same plug.

A standard connector (USB-style): each MCP-compatible tool plugs in with no custom integration.

4. Why it's a game-changer in my setup

Concretely: my Shopify store is connected directly, so is my Drive and my emails, and on the technical side, Claude Code is linked to GitHub → which drives Odoo and Shopify. The result: Claude works on my real tools, not a demo. That's the difference between "a nice chatbot" and "an operational colleague."
